“Fall Daddy Fall”

I am not a fool, nor ignorant of what others have suffered– including my own mother and father.  Therefore, I lay no claim to the worst childhood in America — not by any means. My childhood most certainly had happy moments, but two humans woefully unprepared and unable to bridge a loving, functional, human partnership will almost always lack the ability to parent.  We all did our best with what was available to us at the time, regardless of our many challenges. Luckily, with the right friendships and people in my life, I was able to move on with my own baggage — some packed loosely and some tight, and some baggage thrown out the window as I moved down the road.

Many much happier years later down the road while driving Rachel home from kindergarten, she shared that another kindergartner told her that her mommy and daddy had decided that they were not going to live together anymore and that her mother was moving away.  Not surprisingly, Rachel was sad and needed to share this brief two sentence story with me, and I will never forget her sweet and curious concern for this event.

Later that same night, I woke up in the middle of the night with this entire song in my head.  The words and the melody to “Fall Daddy Fall.”  Much to my own embarrassment and amusement, I have managed to annoy and stun many at social outings and gatherings by singing “Fall Daddy Fall” at the drop of a hat. Sadly, it has yet to make me a million dollars, most likely because Dolly Parton doesn’t know of it yet.

“FALL DADDY FALL”

(1st verse: )

It’s five-thirty again, and the table is set

Dad’s working late, no sign of him yet.

It’s seven-thirty five, and the dinner is gone,

Dad’s on the phone, can’t say when he’ll be home.

(chorus)

Fall daddy fall, way back in love,

with Mommy, little Billie and me.

You won’t fall that far, just turn back and see,

there’s Mommy, little Billie and Me.

(2nd verse:)

The school assembly’s begun, moms and dads everywhere.

I’m looking for mine, no sign of them anywhere.

The school’s out bell rings, to the door it’s a race.

But there’s no mommy waiting…with a loving embrace.

(chorus:)

Please fall Mommy fall, way back in love,

with Daddy, little Billie and me.

you won’t fall that far, just turn back and see,

there’s Daddy, little Billie and me.

(3rd verse:)

Dad can I talk to you, something sad happened today.

Jenny’s Mom told her dad, that she’s moving away.

Mom can I talk to you, will everything be ok?

That you and my Dad, still love each other today.

(Chorus)

Fall daddy fall, way back in love,

with Mommy, little Billie and me.

You won’t fall that far, just turn back and see,

there’s Mommy, little Billie and Me.
